1. In the movie “Juno” the sixteen year old female main character whom the movie was named after gets pregnant. She decides that she wants an abortion but as she walks up to the clinic she runs into a student from her school protesting that “all babies want to get borned”. She also shares with Juno that by now her unborn fetus has fingernails. This odd fact resonates with Juno and she decides not to go through with her “hasty abortion” but instead decides to carry her baby to term and then give her baby up for adoption to a well-equipped couple. Mr. Geib asked us whether or not we believe Juno made the “right” decision, but as far as I’m concerned, I’m not sure what the “right” decision would be for another human being. In fact, I do not believe that it should be my place to criticize what is right or what is wrong for another woman. If I had to write to Juno about what I believe about her decision it would go something like:
    Dear Juno,

It is to my knowledge that at the age of sixteen you had become pregnant. You had been contemplating whether or not to get an abortion, and as we all know, you decided that the best option for you was to go through with the pregnancy. And when it came time to deliver, you gave it up for adoption to what seemed to be the picture perfect married couple. For a girl your age I’d have to applaud you for being so mature about the entire situation. I am in no way saying that abortions are “immature” I am just recognizing that you had to deal with things way beyond any normal highschoolers maturity level. It may have been a smarter decision to consult a doctor for birth control or just go to the corner store and buy a pack of condoms, but who knows, your schooling could have neglected to teach you and your fellow students about safe sex options other than abstinence. Thankfully in our day and age Roe v. Wade exists and the option to have an abortion was available to you if that had been the road you decided to take.

If an unborn fetus’ life should be taken into consideration, so should the woman’s life when deciding whether or not to go through with the pregnancy. A woman’s life is forced to endure difficulties when faced with 9 months of pregnancy. Pregnancy could be an inconvenience to some women since they must take months and months off of work in order to give birth to the baby and recover from the extreme conditions in which the body undergoes during pregnancy. Not to mention, many women cannot afford pre-natal vitamins or the proper pre-natal care to ensure that this child will be healthy when entering this world. Some women’s bodies physically cannot go through the harsh changes it must to support the growth of a healthy baby. I ultimately believe that a woman should always be the one to decide what is right for her, not a bunch of 60 year old men sitting in a courthouse.
